I want a Flash text chat with emoticons. Do you know of any source code sample files of Flash text chat with emoticons, for Red5?  Thanks.

try this page...

http://www.newviewnetworks.com/nvnHome/blog/client/index.cfm/2006/12/14/Red5-Tutorial-BEGINNERS-GETTING-STARTED-TO-RED5-DEVELOPMENT

it has a few tutorials...

you will most likely need to develop this for your own needs though...

does it have to be Red5?

there are tons of other Socket Servers that can do what you want... like:

ElectroServer
http://www.electro-server.com

SmartFox Server
http://www.smartfoxserver.com

I have never really looked at Red5...   also, I know ElectroServer has a few chat apps with tutorials and source code

Well that's really interesting, rascalpants, but Red5 is free, which is why it has to be Red5. Don't have the money for ElectroServer or SmartFox Server, which are quite pricey! Moreover, none of the chat samples therein contain emoticons.

Thanks a bunch anyway!

you didn't read very far did you?

both are free to use with under 20 connections, so you application development is free and you can even run small games and chat apps for free.

Also, creating emoticons in a chat app would be the same in call cases...  you would need to have an HTML text box and then when someone types a specific code sequence, you replace it with an inline image in the htmlText.

My plan calls for more than 20 connections, but perhaps I can start with just 20 and generate enough revenue to justify the purchase.  And I get your drift about the code sequence--but don't know enough to figure that one out. Perhaps you can elaborate a bit more, please?

That ElectroServer chat sample has serious problems with the text not scrolling properly; so eventually, you can't even read the latests text messages in the room.

well, you start out with a dynamic text box that and click on the <> in the properties panal to make it HTML enabled

then you can test it out by typing this code in the actions panel.

theTextBox.htmlText = "you are funny! <img src='emo_smile.jpg'>";

if you have an image by the name of emo_smile.jpg in the same folder as the SWF then it should show up.

now the fun part...

when someone submits a line of text to be displayed, you first check for the existence of a list of characters combinations...  like   :)  :(   :P  ;)   etc.

use the below code to look for an replace the text with emoticon images:

var theLineOfText:String = "Hi, I really like you! :)  want to meet up somewhere and have fun? ;)";

var newLineOfText:String = new String();
newLineOfText = theLineOfText.split(":)").join("<img src='emo_smile.jpg'>");
newLineOfText = newLineOfText.split(":(").join("<img src='emo_frown.jpg'>");
newLineOfText = newLineOfText.split(":P").join("<img src='emo_toungue.jpg'>");
newLineOfText = newLineOfText.split(";)").join("<img src='emo_wink.jpg'>");

theTextBox.htmlText = newLineOfText;
