Restore Sharepoint service 3.0

Hello:
Do you know how to restore sharepoint service 3.0 from backup? Originally, I backed up my sharepoint service 3.0 by using the backup feature. I rebuilt my server. Installed Windows 2003 starndard on the box, downloaded and installed Sharepoint 3.0 on it. Ran the wizard. Then I log on to sharepoint central administration. go to operations, click on restore from backup. somehow, I kept getting message saying
Object sharepoing-80 failed in event restore. Argument exception: The IIS website you have selected is in used by Sharepoint. You must select another name or host.

Did you create the same web application before you restored?

Thanks.

You may need to remove the sharepoint extensions from the Website.
It sounds like you let sharepoint extend it, instead of allowing the restore to rebuild those links for you.

Also, you may be able to use the restore function in overwrite mode (see first link)
