Font version missing in Illustrator

Suddenly Illustrator lists Arial TWICE in the drop down list, but neither option includes Arial Regular. Arial Regular IS available in other programs - including other Adobe programs. Can anyone help me out?

Couple questions:

1. What version of Illustrator?
2. What font style of Arial went missing? TrueType, Opentype, or Postscript?
3. What plaform? Windows or Mac?

If you're using CS3, the Adobe programs have problems seeing Postscript fonts on Windows. Been very frustrating to me and no real fix other than to use Truetype or Opentype fonts.

Is the Arial option displaying differently than the Arial Regular in the other programs?

1. CS2
2. Opentype
3. PC

I just tested the Arial option in Photoshop, and its perfectly normal.

Another weird thing about its behavior in Illustrator - if you're scrolling through the fonts with the up/down keys and try scrolling through Arial, it gets caught in a loop of Arial versions - you can't get through the Arials without using the mouse and selecting a font beyond the loop.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

I would try resetting the preferences file. Could easily be something got corrupted. Hold down Ctrl+Alt+Shift and then launch Illustrator. If asked to delete the settings file, click OK. It may also delete it without asking.

See if this fixes your problem with the font. Sounds to me like somebody had a gremlin move in...

Hmmm. I thought that would work, but no-go. Any other ideas?

I don't really understand why Adobe has a separate fonts folder, but I have been adding/removing the Arial files in that folder with absolutely no effect whatsoever. I'm not sure how to check the Windows fonts - they're all as listed as shortcuts(?).

The Windows font directory is C:\Windows\Fonts.

You say you have removed the Arial font from the Adobe font folder and your problem still exists?

I don't see anything odd in Windows\Fonts, but I haven't tried deleting those files.

Yes, if I delete all arial* files from the ProgramFiles\CommonFiles\Adobe\Fonts directory and re-start Illustrator (not the machine, if that's an issue) there's no change whatsoever.

Do you use a font manager? If so you could use it to uninstall the Windows font. Then I'd reinstall the Arial font in the Adobe directory.

I use Font Expert by www.proximasoftware.com.

I can hardly believe this is a font issue, though, if it is working in the other programs. But I still would try that step I mentioned. Could also try uninstalling and reinstalling the whole Illustrator program....

OK, I did an AI re-install over the weekend, but it was no help. Now I have to think it's an issue with my font files.

I have a font manager and will uninstall/re-install the font in Windows - but I'm not sure how to specifically uninstall & re-install the font for AI??

Points increased. This is a tough one...

Re-installing AI & the Windows fonts were no help. Points increased.

Reduce the numer of installed fonts and check for damaged fonts.
For instructions, http://kb.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=328607

Delete Adobefnt.lst files.
Search your system drive for "Adobefnt*.lst" to find all Adobe CoolType font list files. Delete all found files, and then restart the Adobe application

hope this helps

1) "To isolate a damaged font, you can prevent fonts from being loaded and then load the fonts in small groups. After loading each group of fonts, work in your applications until the problem recurs." How do you do that. (And yes, I have a lot of fonts, but I deleted as many as I could... still over 1,000, but way less than I had before this problem started.)

2) Deleting .lst files doesn't help.

Let me know how to handle #1. Thanks!

Move fonts to other folder and then install them again. Like 50-100 fonts per each time. Then restart AI. Then install more and so on.
When it happens again then U know what fonts(s) give U this problem.

If I try to move ALL fonts to another folder, there are quite a few that stay installed - and they're not all standard system-type fonts, either. Anyway, the problem still exists when all of the fonts that can be removed are removed.

On launch, Illustrator now tells me that the Adobe UI font is missing, even after re-installing all fonts...

Then only thing that helps is remove AI and reisnstall.

Messing with my Windows fonts somehow deleted or corrupted the system font, and upon reboot the whole Windows installation went haywire. After a few more bad decisions I had to re-format the hard drive and start over. Now at least the Illustrator font problem is fixed. :)

I'll keep the tips above in mind if/when it happens again. Thanks.

Whoa! that was burning down the burn to kill all the rats! Sorry it had to come to that.

But thanks for the grade and points.

Yeah...it wasn't my best work. One bad decision can really wreck the weekend. :)

Thanks again.
