Force IP change from ISP

How can i force an IP change from my ISP??

They've assigned me a dynamic IP, however I've been having the same IP for over 6 months, is there any command or way to force an IP change??

I've tried restarting my router, unplugging it for several hours... and it doesn't seen to work :(

Hi there axtur,

Now I'm not sure that this will work with your ISP, but it has done it for me in the past when i have had this problem (i was assigned an IP that was blacklisted for spamming), try logging into your ISP account and changing your username.

No,  I see no way available for you to Force any changes.   Infact some ISP's say their dynamic, just in case a customer want's a specific range to allow them to change it without having to notify you.   Because, your already expecting the change....  I've worked in a few NOC's for Large ISP's and as "Dynamic" as you may think they are, They would rather know who is who for support reasons...

Best bet is to call and request a change.  May I ask why the reason for change?

The only way to force a change of you IP is to change your MAC address. If you have a router you can usually do this within the router configuration with the "clone MAC address" option. If you have a PC connected directly to a modem, you may be able to change the IP in the advanced configuration of your network adapter. This is an option on some adapters. If you have a modem that is a combined modem and router, your only option is to put it in bridge mode and add a router, which would have a different MAC address.

The devices MAC address specifies the IP (IP is linked).

Dynamic means the IP is *not* static and CAN change, however the customer generally has no real control over this process. Things that will cause the IP to change:

1) ISP side reset of equipment (general system upgrades, etc)
2) If you leave your equipment off past the lease time ... you will likely get a new IP

On cable -- IPs are assigned to:
--> Modem
--> router
--> computers (if NAT is not used)

bridging or cloning will only work once... as it will in essence duplicate what you are seeing now (only cable company will see your computer's MAC).

The NOC's I've worked at -- changes will be hard to come by... at residential levels.

Why are you in need of the change? Perhaps there is another solultion on your side...

1) Radius ->

If you change your username and I were your ISP, I'd effect the change of the new username with the existing IP address

If this is the method of address assignment call your ISP

2) DHCP ->

RFC says that once a CPE has received a dynamic IP address *and* the lease has not expired, to provide the same IP address upon request

If this is the method of address assignment and you are truly dynamic you have to wait until the lease expires, reboot your CPE so that it forgets its IP address and release/renew or ask your ISP to setup a static entry for you

Many ISP's for convenience renew the same IP. DHCP lease expiry will not usually result in a new IP unless you are offline a very long time, i.e. days.

Yep -- but the only thing a customer can do proactively... and my last 2 ISPs -- forcing change was only authorized when the it was deemed the IP was not DNS or reverse DNS... last attempt.

It's RFC standard when a DHCP server hands out the same IP within the lease time.  If the lease time has expired and the IP is not next available or has been handed out to another client, he should get a different IP.  

The DHCP config should have a min and a max lease time.  The IP address assigned via DHCP (if that's how it's done) depends upon the ISPs client activity [and lack thereof].

There are DHCP providers that do not follow standard but, if this individual is using DHCP, it sounds as if his ISP is doing so.

I guess the question is:  why the need for a different IP?  If his IP is blacklisted and it's due to negative activity from a different client, his ISP should offer a static IP that's outside the dynamic range.

I don't disagree on the issue of convenience.  It's easier to not have to create or hack a DHCP implementation that falls outside of standard :)

I need an IP change for two reasons:

I'm programming a script in PHP, and since i've implemented an IP banning system, I must be accessing from proxys if I ban my own IP. Second reason, my IP has been banne from some boards.

I have a DSL connection, I connect thru a linksys router. I've called my IPS and they say that they can't help it, my IP is already dynamic and should change at any given time without previous notice. However I've been 6 months with the same addy, unable to change it. Should I change my ISP?

Seems rather radical. Why were you banned, you could end up banned with the new ISP as well. as mentioned if you have the option to change the router's MAC you should receive a new IP. The ISP's routers cannot have the same IP assigned to 2 MAC's.

Ah, in most cases -- dynamic ISP merely means that you are not to expect a static IP... not that you can expect it to regularly change.

I suspect you'll see the same issue with any other ISP.

--> The banning issue on boards, may likely be on the ISP's range of IPs. If did nothing wrong, explain to board / forum admin that it is dynamic IP and you landed one that is banned.

You might consider using a freebie (or charged) dial up. With dial up access, you are almost guarenteed to get a unique IP each login.

Hey,

i work for an ISP and common way to force an IP change is to log onto your ISP with the following Username

Usernmae: BT_TEST@STARTUP_DOMAIN
Password can be anything

Stay Log into this for about an hour and your IP should change when you come to log in again with your normal account details.

this will work on all UK ISP's

It should be noted that it is possible your are being assigned a static IP address dynamically.  the ISP I work for offer ou customer Single static IP solutions, but we assign the IP dynamically.  Best thing to do is call ta ISP if the test detais option didn't work and ask.
