Backup exec access denied and very slow

Hello,

I have backup exec 11d.

I upgraded from 10d to an evaluation of 11d and now have the licensed version.

I have the same no of agents and the advanced file open option as before. Why am I now getting this message?

Backup- \\chexch1.ohareandmcgovern.com\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group Access to the device chexch1.ohareandmcgovern.com\SOPHOS is not authorized with this edition of the product.

Am I missing something?

Also since moving from the evaluation version, the backups run very slow, ( as low as 56mb/min) when backing up the local device. They speed up when they move to the exchange server. It reaches approx 800mb/min. I was getting speeds of approx 1200 mb/min before the eval version.

I am using a quantum superloader with tape changer and main drive, LTO Ultrium 3 tapes, windows server 2003.

Regards

Barry

hi, Barry

1. Is backup Exec installed on a specific account "bkupexec"
2. in the administrative tools under domain local security theses policies needs to enabled
Log on as a service, Backup Files and folders, log on locally, Restore files and folders here you need the account with which the backup is installed, it is recommended to have a seperate account.

3. please check if the bkupexec has an exchange account and send and receive just one email from that account you could use the OWA if you are directly on the server. Also is this account bkupexec listed in the global address from Exchange.

4. Try these mentioned above and then now under the selection from your backup be sure you use this account bkupexec and also start the services with that account. As editing the job check under user credentials just below the selection and run the test check for the user credentials.

If this does not work then maybe now you have a new error code then please list it here.

upps just forgot.

The speed as you mentioned,

Local backups are slower than LAN/WAN, when was the last time you where running a chkdsk?

is the driver still the Veritas driver ?
Is the tape loader also controlled with Symantec drivers would it be possible to get that to unknown driver and see if it changes things.

Do you have the "Agent for Microsoft SQL Server"? I'll assume you don't have it.
When your BE copy was installed in eval mode, it picked up the SOPHOS MSDE database and added it to the job. If you now no longer have the SQL agent, it will give you this error.

Do the following: go into the text mode selections (i.e. in the "selections" section select the second tab, instead of the first tab which shows the graphical selection mode). In the text selections, you should see a line with text "chexch1.ohareandmcgovern.com\SOPHOS" . Delete that line and resubmit your job.

And for the speed issues, try to download the latest device driver pack from support.veritas.com and install that pack. Also bring SCSI controller drivers up to date.

Definitely check the drivers as Cool  and Hon suggested.  A new version of backup exec may have replaced the drivers or if not, then may be slower with older drivers, so get the newest Veritas drivers for your equipment.  That should help the speed. There is a Windows service that may be enabled that should not be... somebody help me out here.. it interferes with the backups...I cannot think of the name of it right now..

Hi thanks all,

The comment re deleting the sophos msde has stopped the failures. But the speed after upgrading to 11d is still a problem. The drivers for the media changer are quantum, the drivers for the tape drive are symantec drivers. If you visit the quantum website they have a warning on their equipment that the device drivers that came in the package should be used. Were they symantec 10d drivers or quantum drivers?

Also there are firmware upgrades available for both. Problem is does anyone know how to flash the devices via the web, I believe its possible. This may solve the issue.

contact the manufacture of your equipment to find out about firmware upgrades.  it is not too difficult, usually download an exe and run it, but they will help you,  since you have put a good amount of money into their equipment already!

In fact Veritas provides excellent support in identifying problems on backups too.  make sure your logging is enabled so you can have it ready if you want to talk to them.

hi, there

regarding the speed just to check if you like.

1. Stop all BE services
2. Start the RSM "removable storageset it to automatic
3. in the device manager delete the drive's
4. restart the server double check that all drivers are now native drivers.

try the same backup using the NTbackup and see if the speed is still slow.
If you do as described above you need only one reboot, and later you can just stop the RSM and start all services for BE.

hi,

If you do need the Symantec support then make a vxgather that is the same as the old begather
placed same place as well

c:\program files\Symantec\backup Exec\

if you are located in the UK the number is 448706066000 just as I normally get support from them
as I support OEM versions of the BE myself.

If you're not sure you had Symantec or Quatum drivers before, then go ahead and load Quantum drivers. Then do the test.
I would also suggest changing the medium changer driver to the "Unknown Medium Changer" as a test (Update Driver/Choose from a list/Show compatible drivers)

Also, Backup Exec 11 can introduce an extra filter driver used to diagnose hardware issues. See http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/285630.htm. If Backup Exec 11 is the only thing that changed, you may want to check that you don't have this filter driver loaded - just in case it would cause a performance hit.
First run "tpfilter status" from the Backup Exec directory. If it says that the filter driver is installed, I would suggest running "tpfilter remove". Then reboot and see if your backups are now faster.

Hi,

Cooledits solution re stop all services and delete the devices may have fixed the problem. Along with honmapog re the sophos error. However RMS was running and when I disabled all bexecservices, deleted the devices and rebooted the same drivers were used. I the restarted the bexec services. My full backup is now running at approx 1200-1330 mb/min. Quite acceptable. However before accepting the solution I need to run a differential backup as this is what I was running when getting the slow speed. Are differentials backed up at a different speed to full backups? Are differentials worth doing? should I be doing full backups each night? My backups at present are about 380gigs and fit on one tape.

honmapogCommented:
Differentials will always be slower than full backups. This because you back up a lot less files - so less MBs and less MBs/min. But you still have the overhead on the source side of checking all files to see if there have been any changes to the files.

You should never use differential backups to judge performance.

If your full backups can finish within your "backup window", I suggest you stick to full backups. You'll use a bit more tapes, but it makes things a lot easier when it comes to restoring.

ok, I have switched to full backups and got a rate of 1099mb/min for 452 gig. It took 8.5 hours including the verify. I would say this is acceptable?  If this is acceptable I will stay with full backups.

I still need to contact quantum for a firmware upgrade. I will log that call today.

I have this morning removed the tpfilter and will let you know how it goes tonight.

Barry
