Windows XP Activation Loop

We have a users laptop that display the following message on top of the welcome screen : DIALOGUE HEADING - "Windows Product Activation"   MESSAGE "This copy of Windows must be activiated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate Windows now. OPTIONS - YES  /  NO.

When we click YES we get the message "Windows is already activiated, click OK to exit" When we click OK its take us back to the Welcome screen, We then click on the user icon and we get the first message back again.

We have used the following fix with no success apart from the windows re-install :-;EN-US;Q314935

The machine has Genuine Windows XP Pro installed. We can gain access to the OS desktop through safe mode.

We would prefer not to re-install if possible.

Many Thanks

I had a similar probem with an OEM version of windows XP when we changed the MB. Ultimately we had to reinstall. Did you recently change hardware?

Not sure, but it could be a corrupted registry.

Have you tried with a different user profile ?

    have you done an
    SFC /scannow from a DOS box ?

Have you tried a registry cleaner ?

If nothing helps, then a repair install may be needed, which should preserve all programs and data, although I prefer to backup just in case.

    I hope this helps !

Only one proflie and admin, both have same issue. SFC does not run in safe mode, still trying other fixes before attempting repair install.  thank you.

             Hi mikcanavan
Unfortunately this is a known bug and you dont have any other possibilty then reinstall. But before doing so, deactivating windows-restart then do the activation on startup.
                   How to deactivate:
Click Start > Run > and type in Regedit
    Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\wpaevents
    Double-click OOBETimer
Remove the 'ca' part from the value. (Changing or deleting any of the binary values will accomplish the same effect)

Then restart windows and activate on startup
