USB devices stop after running windows update.

I have a ze4400 pavillion laptop with usb2.0/ieee1394 combo cardbus pcmcia adapter. To that i have connected a wireless usb card wn320g and an external harddrive.  Laptop was not very stable and crashes once in a while.  So i decided to run windows update after a very long time.  There were 80 of them. After they were installed my usb devices wouldnt stay on.  After working for a few minutes, they would disconnect.  If i unplug them and plug them back in, nothing would happen.  I either have to wait for a very long time (and that dont always work) or shut down before plugging them back.  I think this started to happen after 60th update.  I am not sure.
Could this be a coincidence and its time to get a new computer (which is what i want to do anyways) or there is an update that caused that?  Which update could it be and how could i remove it?

Seems like one at a time can work for a while....

First thing you might want to do is leave the windows updates on the computer. Go to the manufactures website for your usb devices and download the latest drivers and reinstall the devices.

The next thing you can try is uninstalling all of the windows updates that you just installed before this issue happend and install them 10 updates at a time and test the devices with the new updates for a day or so and see if the problem happens again. If not, install the next 10 updates until you find the update that is causing the problem.

You could also do a "Last Known Good Configuration" by pressing F8 while the computer boots choose "Last Known Good Configuration" see if that solves the issue.

One last thing I can think of at the moment is going to the manufactures website for you motherboard and download the lastest USB Controllers for your Motherboard.

Hope this helps

Thanks for a lightning reply.
I will try uninstalling updates, and see if there are driver updates for the cardbus drivers.  Remember i use the pcmcia usb card not the ones that come with the laptop.  They are 1.1s and are too slow for my external harddrive.

Where do i uninstall updates (they are not listed in add-remove programs)and how can i do them all 80 at once (one by one could be annoying)?
Could system restore help in any way?

Before uninstalling all those updates, have you checked your device manager to see if the USB drivers are installed correctly or if they have a ? for USB. If they do, then you need the drivers, probably chipset drivers. If they are listed and not working, or just not listed, you may have some bum USB ports. Let us know how it works out.

My drivers seem to be up to date, excep for some weirdness.
Device manager does not report anything abnormal.
Trial version of driver detective says that my "VIA rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller" is out of date, yet with mine being 5.1.2600.2180 and with the latest on internet 5.1.2600.1100 It also found another 2 unknown USB devices. No clue what those are.
Driver Genius figures that there is 5.1.1039.1050 version of my tp-link out there, yet it cannot download it. I cant find anything better than 5.1.1039.1030

During my searchies i found this page.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=EF6C21B9-EBE1-4C5B-9DD4-5C0EB387311E&displaylang=en
It contains interesting KB numbers for my usb thing

You remove your updates from the Add/remove programs in the control panel. Just make sure that at the top the little box that says "show updates" is checked off.

This morning usb wireless would come on no matter how much times i unplug and plug back in the usb or the pcmcia card.  Restarted in "last known good configuration" still nothing.  Following the driver suggestion, i was lucky enough to find a CD that came with the PCMCIA card.  It had uninstall drivers wizard that i went through and then install card drivers wizard.  After that usb tp-link went on smoothly.
I should have stopped there, but being inspired by driver updates, i decided to visit windows updates again. There were some more updates for my hardware including my touchpad, sound and tplink (!!).  I put them on and was not satisified.  My touchpad scrolling stopped working (highly irritating), and tp-link would drop out a few times again.  If it happens again, then i'll roll drivers back for all of that.

When you are on the Windows Update website or Micorsoft website from what i've learned in my own experience is never download hardware updates for your devices. Either go to the manufacturing website or leave the current ones installed.

OK, i finally figured out how to do the cabling around the house and got rid of wireless as i wanted from long time.  Wireless got a long way to go before i can say its good technology (in my oppinion).  So thats one thing less to warry about.  So its just the usb external harddrive.  It dropped out once yestarday.  I think this can be narrowed down driver issues as suggested by Spec01.

Also, that card may not the in best working condition.  Perhaps data traveling through it from wireless adapter and harddrive was clashing (if thas possible with USB)?? I get this idea, becuase once i plug my usb headphones in one port and harddrive in the other, and everytime there was drive activity, there would be terrible noise in my headphones.

For now i go with driver problem.  If i want to put back the old 5.1.2600.1100 driver back on the card how could i do it?  Even when going through uninstall driver, once i plug it back in, it comes back with microsofts 5.1.2600.2180.  How can i force it to use the .1100 one from the CD.
