Free multiple domain mail server
I am looking for a free mail server that can handle multiple domains with the same emails i.e. sales@domain1.com and sales@domain2.com . It needs to feature smtp authentacation, mailing lists, auto responders, forwarding and alias's. I am currently running Argosoft pro.

how do i define between sales@domain1.com and sales@domain2.com?
Hi,
I have Implemented the same thing in Exim on FreeBSD. Basically In exim u define the local domains as well as the domains to relay and if the domain is not local then SMTP server queries the DNS for IP address of the SMTP server but in case of the Windows there must be some option in the options to define the domains as local or relay domains.

thanks, thats helpful.
when it relays the domain, what does it look for in the dns? If i have our main smtp server relay the 2nd domain to a separate server on our domain that would work?
if so, can i do that in argosoft pro?

sorry, argosoft PLUS not pro
Hi,
The mechanism is simple. We define the local as well as domains to relay. I.e
sales@domain1.com is a SMTP server named abc with IP 10.0.0.12
sales@domain2.com is a SMTP server named def with IP 10.0.0.13
In abc server, the local domain is defined 'sales@domain1.com' as well as the domain to relay is defined as 'sales@domain2.com' and the opposite is in def server. Now when a mail from sales@domain1.com for sales@domain2.com arrives at abc server, it checks if the domain is local by parsing the domain part 1st and if it is not local domain, then it checks if the domain is present in the domain to relay list. if so then it queries the DNS to check what is the IP address of domain2.com. When it is returned as 10.0.0.13 then it sends mail to the SMTP server at def.
I donn knw how it can be Implemented in Argosoft but I have given you the generic mechanism under which the mail system works.

Using Sendmail under linux, all domains belong to a unique group.
(domain = somesite.com || group = "ssite")
When an account is created (webmaster) the account name is actually saved appending the group name to it.
(webmaster.ssite)
Any messages sent to webmaster@somesite.com is delivered to webmaster.ssite

I should note: this isn't normal behavior, it's how we handle it using Sendmail

kenfcamp: is this the default setup of sendmail?
Yes, providing it's using the virtusertable and/or alaises file(s)
Though keep in mind that the functionality really doesn't have to do with sendmail as much as it does how we create users for domains.

ended up running multiple domains on argosft, which means sales@domain1 is the same as sales@domain2.. dont really have the time to do it properly..
ASKER
Note: now using Global Domination (EVSA) mail filter that can redirect multiple domains to seperate mail servers.
