Hi...apologies first of all for the sketchy details which follow....have to go on site and look at the following problem and this is the only info i have available.

there is a windows 2000 server running exchange 2000.  The server boot ups and loads windows and goes as far as the login screen but then "hangs"..CTRL ALT DEL has no effect... the server cannot be pinged or accessed over the network.  the same is true when the server is biited in safe mode.... i know the details are sketchy but any suggestions as to where i might start to diagnose this problem further would be appreciated.

My first port of call would be to boot up the server in it's diagnostic mode and run basic hardware tests.
I would particularly run test on the disk array and memory.

Most servers have diagnostics pre loaded. What make is your server?

There are couple things that you need to concern since the server passed all the hardware scan and got up up to the windows login prompt. Answer these following questions for us to troubleshoot your problem effectively:
    - Is this server also a domain controller?
    - Do you have other servers than this one? If yes, how is the traffic on that server?
    - Did you check the network router cable to be sure everything is normal (green ligth everywhere)?
    - Do you have antivirus server? Does it detect any worms?

Your exchange server may be infected by viruses or worms. If it is the case, unplug the network cable and reboot your server to see if you can login it locally with local admin credential. After you be sure everything is clean on your server, you can look in your network to see if the network is OK (the trick is if you see your network switch or router running heavily traffic with the green led fast blinking, your network may be infected).
