I have sharepoint services setup a w2k3 x64 box. It has been running fine. The other day i went to connect to it and it told me unable to connect to database. So i checked the event viewer and found this

 Event ID 5586

Unknown SQL Exception 2 occured. Additional error information from SQL Server is included below.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

The article is applicable to SQL 2005 Express, which is the same as MSDE.

Have you read it??

You have MSDE 2000?

If so, upgrade to SQL 2005 Express, which is free. You will then be able to troubleshoot.

I also forgot to add that when i try and start the SQLAgent$Sharepoint service on the 2k3 server it tells me that services started then stopped.  I am unclear as to how it connects if it is via the 2k server or uses msde on the 2k3 server.

I would guess MSDE 2000. Is there a way to check to see if the WSS connects to this other server for sql or on the local server.

Well  the box was started giving me a BSOD. looked up the error code and it looks like it is out of memory. I am adding more memory today to see what happens.
