Outlook Web Access certificate authentication implementation

We have an OWA server which is outside our firewall, and using domain login credentials at the back end server to authenticate into the network and therein to the exchange server mailbox. We are trying to figure out how to implemented certificate authentication via card and card reader. So I would have to put in my ID card into a card reader from home to just get into my OWA site, and then once it authenticates me from that, then I would have to put in my domain log in credentials. Not really sure what other information I should provide, other than we don't have enough expertise here to figure this out.
