Cannot exmerge Data from RSG using old store not used anymore.

OK guys, here's my problem.
First: this is Windows 2003 SP2 with Exchange 2003 SP2. One server. One ORG. One Forest. One Domain.

I inherited an exchange server at this hospital about 2 years ago. It was in bad shape. Since then, I have been cleaning it up and moving users in new stores within different storage groups. The original 150GB store is gone and in its place are 11 Stores within 3 storage groups. My backup guy has backups before and after these changes were made. What has happened is a user lost quite a bit of email and needs it restored. The problem is that it needs to be restored form the single store before all these changes.

So far I have created a store with the same name and location as the original 150GB store. Then I was able to attach the original store to the Recovery Storage Group. I had the backup restored and so far everything worked. I mounted the restored store in the RSG fine. The problem is I cannot exmerge the data to a PST. Im getting a permission error, but I have full rights to the store. I can exmerge data on different stores with no problem. I do this all the time, just never with a old store.

Here is a piece of the log:

[09:29:24] Found 707 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases.
[09:29:24] Skipped 138 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases because of errors.
[09:29:24] Ignored 3 mailbox(es) homed on the specified databases.

[09:29:38] Copying data from mailbox 'Billy Boy' ('BOYB') on Server 'TIEX01' to file 'C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\KENNEDYJ\DESKTOP\BOYB.PST'.
[09:29:38] Error opening message store (MSEMS). Verify that the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is running and that you have the correct permissions to log on. (0x8004011d)
[09:29:38] Errors encountered. Copy process aborted for mailbox 'Billy Boy' ('BOYB').
[09:29:38] Number of items copied from the source store for all mailboxes processed: 0
[09:29:38] Total number of folders processed in the source store: 0
[09:29:38] 0 mailboxes successfully processed. 1 mailboxes were not successfully processed. 0 non-fatal errors encountered.
[09:29:38] Process completion time: 00:00:00

Any Ideas? What do I need to do to get the data off the old store?

Create a new user account make it a member of domain users and also a local administrator on the exchange server, then goto the security tab for the RSG and add that user to the ACL with Full Control.

Now run Exmerge as that user account by right clicking and select Runas

Hold on.. new error using new account. I will not populate the mailboxes in exmerge.
An error was encountered when retrieving the list of mailboxes homed in the selected databases on this server "TIEX01". Please refer to the log file, 'ExMerge.log', for more information.
here is the log.

I had to do this recently, and I believe your problem is that the user's mailbox now lives in a different store/storage group (even though you've manually created the old store; it needs to know where the actual mailbox is). There's an attribute of the recovery storage group you need to change (msexchorigmdb) with adsiedit.msc.

See the section labeled "How the Recovery Storage Group Links Back to the Original Database" in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824126
