Inbound mail stuck in queue between Exchange 2003 server and Exchange 2007 server.

W2k3 sp2 domain,
1 Exch 07 server with HT,CA,MB roles + Forefront,
1 Exch 03 server with GFI MailEssentials serves as a de facto Edge Transport server but no actual ET in the Exch Org.

Mail moves in both directions internally fine; mail moves outbound to the Internet fine; Mail from the Internet is stuck and accumulating in queues on the Exch 03 server.

Connectors all appear fine but no inward flow from Exch 03 to Exch 07. The 07 Mail Flow troubleshooter tool, when run against the 03 server confirms this, when run against the 07 server finds no problems.

The only relevant info I can find in the lWindows event log is : Warning (Source MSExchange Transport; Event ID 15002) : "Inbound mail submission form the Internet, the Pickup directory, and the Replay directory has stopped. Loading of email from the queuing database, IF AVAILABLE, continues. "

Was this ever working? If so what changes were made? When you say internal mail is fine, do you mean that users on the 2K3 box can send to users on the 2K7 box?

The server was operational and no recent changes had been made.

We had to bite the bullet and call Redmond to get the problem corrected. Turns out that when the backup of the 07 server was configured several months ago, it was not purging the old transaction logs. Therefore, the size of the First Storage Group had ballooned to over 50GB and a resource shortage had occurred.

The solution was to: 1) Turn off resource monitoring to prevent futher back pressure conseuqences; 2) Gracefully purge the old transaction logs and re-home the First Storage group to another array; 3) Reconfigure backup.

    Thanks for your efforts ---
