Slow Exchange backup

I am using Veritas 9.1 on a 2003 Windows Server. It is taking me currently 24 hours to back my Exchange Server ( 45gb ). I'm doing a brick layer backup witch I want to continue to use, but the performance is far to slow. This backup I'm told was a 12 hour process now taking 24. my network back is running fine 425 Gb in 12 hours. Any insite on what could be causing this huge performance loss. I know Exchange is normally a slow backup job, but this isn't acceptable.

AS Backup Exec uses MAPI to backup mailboxes it is by design slow(MAPI limitatition)
however take a look at the following docs

Slow throughput while backing up Microsoft Exchange mailboxes for Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 Servers.

Slow transfer rate or "Drive Not Responding" while performing Microsoft Exchange 5.5 or Microsoft Exchange 2000/2003 individual mailbox backups with Backup Exec for Windows Servers 7.x, 8.x, 9.x and 10.x

Reasons why the data throughput rate can be slower than the theoretical maximum when backing up to tape media

Slow backup performance occurs when backing up Microsoft Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 servers between 1:00 am and 5:00 am.

Best practices when using Symantec Mail Security and Backup Exec for Windows Servers
