Hi there,

In order to add another instance of SQL you are required to install a new installation with a new name which of course would require an additional license.

We have SQL 2005 standard edition running on wk3 server...  We've had a consultant set up a new instance on the machine in the past without requiring access to installation, etc.  Could he possibly have done something different to make this work?  We are installing backup exec on the machine and it needs an sql instance.  Would it be better to let it install  it's own sql2005 express instance?  I wanted to capitalize on the sql server installation we already had.

Thanks,
Paul Collins

MrManderson,

PTJCB is correct, in order to install another instance of SQL Server on the same machine you will need the installation disks to do that.  However if memory serves, during the installation of Veritas you can specify which SQL Server to use if you have a SQL Server already existing.  Check the installation manual or online help from Veritas for the installation procedures using an existing.  However this will remove the ability to restore the Master database to the SQL Server that Veritas is running from.  If you need to be able to recover the Master database, then installing Veritas using the existing SQL Server installation would not be a good option for you.
