Multiple Instances of Outlook 2003

Office 2003 Basic edition. The user had previously been able to open up two instances of Outlook. They keep many other users calendars open, and opening up two instances makes them readable. (1/2 in one instance 1/2 in the other)

Something changed on one users workstation, and now it will only open up a single instance of Outlook. If you try and open another one, it just refreshes the original opened Outlook.

I looked it up, and found that Outlook 2003 is a single instance application. It should not be opening on the other workststions in multiple instances. But it does, and is very convienient. Any ideas how to get the multiple instance working again?

Hi, Cirritech.

It has never been possible to open two instances of Outlook.  What you can do though is open multiple Outlook windows.  For example, I keep my calendar open in its own window.  That may appear as two instances of Outlook, but it is in fact two windows open in one instance.  You can open as many Outlook windows as desired.  To open a folder in a separate window, simply right-click the folder and select Open in new window.

The user swears that he had always (untill a day or two ago)  clicked the outlook icon again, and had a second inbox, calendar, etc. and swears the other users are still doing this today. I haven't seen it with my own eyes, but he is usually one of the more reliable users.

Regardless, the solution (workaround) you have provided will do.

Thanks.

Multiple instances can be opened by modifying "Target:" in the properties of the shortcut that opens Outlook. Remove the recycle switch:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE"  /recycle

Change to:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\OUTLOOK.EXE"
