Outlook Users cannot sync with exchange - messages moved to Local Failures folder...

We have an exchange server that runs on an SBS2003 box, and a problem has suddenly occured through no intervension by anyone. Outlook clients can no longer sync correctly with the exchange server. Whenever you hit send and recieve, i get an error 0x80004005 - Operation Failed. If i try and move an email from one folder to another, it gets moved back after about 15 seconds... if i create a new mail, it gets put in the sent items, then gets moved into the local failures folder. This is happening with everyone. If i turn off cached exchange mode, outlook refuses to open complaining about not being able to open the folders.

There isnt any AV on the server, and we dont run ISA... any ideas what the issue is? Many thanks!

All the services are running, and the exchange stores are all mounted... the weired thing is, everything works fine if using outlook web access... Nothing glaringly obvious in the event logs either...

Free recovery tool for Microsoft Active Directory

Veeam Explorer for Microsoft Active Directory provides fast and reliable object-level recovery for Active Directory from a single-pass, agentless backup or storage snapshot — without the need to restore an entire virtual machine or use third-party tools.

there could be alot of things causing this error.
Some things to check:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;329936&spid=2520&sid=1338
although this won't be a profile problem because this occurs on all mailboxes you could try readding the profile:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312354/en-us
Did you do any updates on the server? is exchange running sp2?
why isn't there any antivirus running on the server btw?
Did you check quotas, hd space?

Some other possibilities:

Its not a profile problem as you rightly suspect, as ive deleted and readded profiles all day today and yesterday.

I checked quotas' - all ok as i removed the limits as a test and it still does it. Theres no AV on the server yet, currently looking for a solution that fits our needs, so AV is planned for the future.

No updates were made, and exchange was running sp1.... ive just this minute updated to sp2 and things do look promising as there is no more error when i hit send/recieve, but OWA is now broken... ill update you all in a few minutes when the server has restarted. If all is ok when its restarted, ill award the points as necessary.

BTW: av on client machines vary at the moment (again, part of the future AV solution).... from AVG to NOD32 etc.

There is a list of support documents and patches that must be applied when installing SP2 on an SBS here:  http://sbsurl.com/sp2

I would note that you should never have to manually create an Outlook profile for a user on an SBS network if you properly joined the workstations to the domain using http://<servername>/connectcomputer.  If you did not join the workstations in this manner, you should fix this by following the steps outlined here:  http://sbsurl.com/rejoin

To see all that ConnectComputer does for you, please see http://sbsurl.com/connect

SP2 changed a number of networking protocols... it has affected certain brands of Network Interfaces... so perhaps those machines that are not working all have the same NIC?  Make sure the drivers are the very latest and be sure to install the patches mentioned on the page I linked above.

Either you can keep feeding me the errors that come up and I can search for them in Google or you can.  Why don't you cut me out of the middle of this and look them up yourself?  It would sure save you a lot of time!

Well, then lets look at your DNS settings.  Please post a COMPLETE ipconfig /all from both the SBS as well as a sample workstation.

I think there are some major problems with your exchange, and even with the whole sbs server.
As Jeff said, please post an ipconfig /all of the server, + the good and the bad client :p
Did you do any manual changes on your exchange config?
When did you start noticing those strange things?

looks pretty good, but please remove the other dns server 192.168.252.1 because the ONLY dns server should be the SBS server, NOT your gateway.
The external dns servers should be configured through the CEICW (connect to the internet wizard on the management console).

You're also missing the WINS server setting on your server.  It should be set to 192.168.252.254.  Exchange uses WINS extensively and this is most likely the cause of your sync problems.

I've just installed sp2 to see if that helped, and it didnt... ive installed outlook on the server itself (i know you shouldnt do that, but what more can it do to make it worse lol).... it has the same problem as the problem machines (and thats local!). I've changed the network settings on the NIC in the server to include the WINS server, still no change... any more ideas before i loose my mind? lol

What more can it DO?  It will BREAK your EXCHANGE server!!!  BAD MOVE!

Because if you break Exchange you will have to FULLY reinstall Exchange AND IIS.

It was also a bad move to install SP2 at this point.  You should never install a service pack to a malfunctioning machine.

After you changed the NIC settings you needed to rerun the CEICW.  Did you do that?

well it looks like i might have to fully reinstall things anyway if i cant get it sorted soon... I'm an engineer on site at a customers so i'm frantically trying anything before we have to go down the route of a full server restore.

When i changed the settings, i did indeed run the CEICW wizard. No effect.

Yes, but you installed Outlook on your SBS which most likely broke Exchange because it uses a different version of MAPI and would overwrite Exchange's registration of that component.

Therefore, I suggest you follow http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320202 to reinstall Exchange and IIS.  This will NOT affect your Exchange data at all.
