Outlook Users cannot sync with exchange - messages moved to Local Failures folder...

We have an exchange server that runs on an SBS2003 box, and a problem has suddenly occured through no intervension by anyone. Outlook clients can no longer sync correctly with the exchange server. Whenever you hit send and recieve, i get an error 0x80004005 - Operation Failed. If i try and move an email from one folder to another, it gets moved back after about 15 seconds... if i create a new mail, it gets put in the sent items, then gets moved into the local failures folder. This is happening with everyone. If i turn off cached exchange mode, outlook refuses to open complaining about not being able to open the folders.
There isnt any AV on the server, and we dont run ISA... any ideas what the issue is? Many thanks!
