How RAM do you have? What is the Page File (swap file) set at?

Do you have any Add-Ins loaded in any of the office applications, e.g. Adobe Acrobat, that could be requiring an internet connection & is timing out when/if one is not available?

Have you recently removed any peripherals? If you have removed some that are not USB based then you may well have trouble if you have not removed their software drivers.

Also, check the default printer is pointing to a printer that is connected (still).

Maybe it points to a network device that is no longer available.

thanks for the replies I appreciate all of them, RAM is not an issue nor is the paging file all of our pc's are setup the same with the same usb wireless keyboard and mouse combos (no other devices) software addins are the same the normal Adobe and such but only two users (with different pc's) are having this trouble, I liked the printer thought but thats not it either. I am going to add a temp user profile to see if that has the same trouble... will keep you all informed

Hi,

Thanks for your feedback.

I don't suppose you have an over-zealous Anti-Virus application installed that checks for viruses on file open, create, move, delete, etc. etc, when it only needs to check for file open requests?

I have seen examples of the Kaspersky Anti-Virus software slowing MS-Office applications to a stand-still.

Sorry; I forgot to ask if the problem is prevalent when you launch, say a ".xls" workbook file from Windows Explorer (by double-click & file association to the MS-Excel product), or whether the problem manifests itself when you use, say the [CTRL]+[O] / "File" / "Open..." keyboard/menu options.

If you have not tried one method of launching, please try the other & see a suitable workaround is possible until the issue is resolved.

Additionally, I would suggest running MS-Excel in "safe mode" to see if the situation improves...

Click the [Start] button.
Select "Run...".
Type:
excel.exe /s
Click [OK].

...

If you are not getting anywhere, try this:

First...

[Start] button / "Run..."
Type:
excel.exe /unregserver

Then...

[Start] button / "Run..."
Type:
excel.exe /regserver

And run MS-Excel as normal.

BFN,

fp.

Found out that recently the video driver was upgraded to the latest version - so I deleted video card from Device Manager.  Then I rebooted, let Windows put its own device driver in and Office worked fine.
