Is the D-link getting it's WAN IP's via DHCP?  Is the WAN light on? You're connection to the router sounds ok...but how about the routers connection to the Net?

You could try running the winsock fix: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4372.html, but as axiomtechnologies said, are you sure the router's connecting?

I am now able to connect via a network cable I noticed that in the host file it was pointing to ip address 216.203.102.48    SC00102$
not sure what that was for?
deleted it and it seemed to work via network cable but i am still not able to connect via wireless
tried uninstalling wireless card and reinstalling wireless card
can find wireless network but can't connect to it
limited or no connectivity!
not sure what i am missing?
thanks for the help
would updating the driver to the wireless NIC make a difference?

It's usually a good idea to update the drivers to the latest version for both your adapter and the firmware on your router.

Did you run the winsock fix? That would have cleared your hosts file and reset and number of other settings that usually prevent the connection.
