How does Treo email work?

I need a Treo-type phone;  I'm going to go with AT&T.   Right now all my email is forwarded to my ATT DSL Yahoo email account, where I filter it.  Then I pull it down into Outlook (and simulaneously delete it from Yahoo).

I need a general understanding of how the Treo email is going to work.  I assume that I'll need a data contract for the Treo (I think).  I just can't wrap my head around how I can access the same email on the Treo and the Yahoo webmail.

I know know that AT&T will explain all this to me...I was hoping to go into that conversation with a slightly better view of the situation.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes you need a data package. They are usually incorporated with the total monthly package, but can be adjusted depending on your anticipated e-mail usage.
There are several ways to configure the various units. With your configuration you probably want to use one of the following options:
1) The provider will give you a mail box for the Treo. You can forward a copy of the mail to that mail box and the Treo will collect the mail from there
2) You can configure, on-line, your Treo service to collect a copy of mail from an existing POP mail account with any provider, and choose the option to leave the mail on the server. This way it will still be there for you to pick up later using Outlook. Using this method, if Outlook collects the mail before the Treo gets a copy, it will never reach the Treo. This can be advantageous as you will reduce the amount of mail sent to the Treo, and the cost. Do not leave Outlook open and set to automatically download mail, or you will never receive any on the Treo.

Thanks, that clears up the picture a lot.  I'll probably be doing Treo email only when I'm not at my desktop with Outlook, so there shouldn't be much conflict.  Coupla followon's and I appreciate this may be out of range:

A) "They are usually incorporated with the total monthly package"...for the cell phone account? (I really do need to talk to AT&T about this one...)

B) I suppose I could web-browse yahoo email on the Treo, and selectively download it, or is that really awkward?  (and perhaps uses a lot of bandwidth...)

A) Yes you need to talk to the vendor every one has multiple plans, and they are all different.

b) Yes you can browse, I don't know if you can selectively download, that would be a function of your Yahoo account. You can set the mail configuration with most services just to download the headers. If it is an e-mail you want to read you can download the balance of the e-mail. Browsing can be expensive as it uses more bandwidth than just downloading test for an e-mail.

Sorry didn't see your second post. That would work, but might cost more in the end than actually downloading it. Browsing can be slow too.

Thanks, that's a great starting point for looking at the vendor offerings.
