I'M BUILDING A NEW SERVER... PLEASE PROVIDE INPUT ON CONFIGURATION

Hi All,

I'm building a new Exchange 2007 Server that will also be hosting my Active Directory and Shared Drives. I'm trying to figure out the configuration, as I do want to keep this on a tight budget, but have good parts.

Please see my current configuration http://inspnet.com/EXCHANGE2007SERVER.pdf and provide input. I'm assigning 500 points to this question because I plan on having a "shared answer" by the people that provide the most helpful input.

Thanks Everyone!!!!!!!

First Microsoft does not recomend running Exchange and AD on the same server.

Second I would recomend buying an actual server and not seting up a workstation as a server.  Servers are designed to run longer and more reliably with redundent hardware, and you can get entry level servers for resionable prices.

Other than that your specs look OK.

Thanks,

I know about the whole MS recommendation thing, but this is for my home, so meh!

Thanks for the advice on getting an actual server, but again with the budget, this similar configuration from Dell on a server was about 40% more expensive

Cheers.

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

i need 4 gb ram

i've looked at the ML100/ML150 but found that they were again over the price point.

the config located on the pdf that i published comes in at $1350

OK Since this is for home use you should be alright, however if you plan on using this in production (not for testing or learning) you may have problems later.

Thanks,

I was mainly concerned about part compatibility. Motherboard/RAM/Processor

So...

I bought the components (upgrade mb to deluxe, and reduced to 3 hard drives), have configured it in RAID5 with 3 Hard drives, all drives can be seen from the BIOS, but when i goto install windows, i'm having issues.

basically it goes through loading all the drivers, then goes to a blue screen of death... 0x0000007B is the error message...

any help would be appreciated!

I FOUND THAT THE ISSUE WAS RELATED TO WINDOWS SETUP NOT HAVING THE DRIVERS TO ACCESS THE DVD-RW DRIVE AS IT WAS ON SATA...

SO I INSTALLED AN IDE DRIVE...

HOWEVER... I WOULD STILL LIKE FOR THE SATA DVD-RW DRIVES TO WORK.
