Does a SQL Cluster using Windows Enterprise 2003 and SQL Cluster 2005 support only FAILOVER, or does it also allow LOAD-BALANCING?

It does not support load balancing.  However, there is a trick you can use to make better use of the servers.

Most examples, describe an Active/Passive scenario which means that one server is live (Active) and the other is a hot standby (Passive).  So if the Active server goes down services are transferred to the Passive server.  Each server has one instance of SQL.

The trick I did was setup a Active/Active setup.  In this case there are four instances of SQL!  There is one active instance on each server and one passive.  Each server is the passive copy of the other server.

I then split the load by putting different databases on each server.  One has reporting databases (datamarts) and the other runs the application databases.

To be honest though I hired a consultant to do it.  It took him one week including documentation, setup and testing.
