I see all over the Internet that the DOS print.exe command accepts switches such as /c and /t (for clearing out files or the entire queue) but on three different Windows XP machines I find the DOS command does not in fact support these switches.  Am I missing something?

It depends on which version on the command you're using:

See here about the command options:

Hope this helps!

so on a windows xp box, which one do i use so that I can clear pending/queued print jobs... and how to I call that specific version?  We have an application that on rare occasion gets "hung up" in the queue, even after rebooting the machine, and I think that if I could just clear the queue we'd be just fine...

If all you want to do is to clear the queue, then try this instead:

open a command prompt type the following commands:

net stop "print spooler"
net start "print spooler"

That will probably provide you with a better result.

Hope this helps!

that implies use of the WINDOWS print spooler, which was empty.  We are using a .bat file to issue a PRINT command so the jobs do not show up in the windows print spooler as far as I can tell.  I actually found that page that you linked me to, before I posted here... i need the DOS print command that supports the switches that appear on that page... that would solve my problem.  So either I'm doing something wrong, or that page that you sent me to, listing all those available switches on XP, is 100% incorrect...

Ah, ok....

Can you give me the exact syntax you're using?

the batch file contains a single line,

print %1

where %1 is a command line parameter consisting solely of a file name.

i've tried print /t and the other switches, but none of the switches are implemented.  Doing print /? gives me the only supported switch as follows:

C:\Documents and Settings>print /?
Prints a text file.

PRINT [/D:device] [[drive:][path]filename[...]]

   /D:device   Specifies a print device.

C:\Documents and Settings>

Must be the switches are just not supported... I'll do a test to see if the dos print jobs end up in the windows print spool, again, but I don't think they do...

Thanks...

The print command under XP doesn't support switches that I could find:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/ntcmds.mspx?mfr=true

However, I thought that it was still routed through the print spooler.

It goes fast (because the job is so small) but the DOS print jobs DO end up going through the windows print spooler and therefore appear in the print queue window.  The jobs did not appear "stuck" in the queue but I think we may have solved the stuck job problem.

For reference, we're using the DOSPrint program, and we've also implemented the registry and system.ini changes found at this url:

Thank you for your help!
