Hi,

I have a file server.Because of some OS issues need to format them.So i need to take all the share and security permission setting backed up.So that after the format i dont need to spend time give access to each folder. Is there a way to back all the permissions.

If you're in a domain you can use NTBackup: http://www.mcmcse.com/microsoft/guides/ntbackup.shtml

If you're in a domain with multiple domain controllers, just backup and restore.

If you only have one server, backup the SAM first. You can download two resource kit utilities for this, called REGBACK and REGREST.

The syntax for your SAM would be:
regback c:\backupfolder\sam.bku machine sam

Next create the backup of your files, rebuild your server, restore the SAM (regrest c:\backupfolder\sam.bku c:\backup\sam.old machine sam) and finally restore your backup.

I'm not sure if it backups and restore your share names, but it does restore all the permissions on the file system.
The downloads can be found here: http://www.petri.co.il/download_free_reskit_tools.htm

If there are no other domain controllers in your network then you'll have to do the procedure with the REGBACK and REGREST.

In that case Veritas will take care of the backup of permissions.
