I have a server running Server 2003. We have loaded VMWare on this machine and currently have 7 virtual machines running on it. This environment is strictly Development. Anyways we have built a new Virtrual Server to House Backup Exec. [This is where the issues com into play.  We have placed a new scsi card into the server (Adaptec 39160/3960D- Ultra160 Scsi). On the server itself I see this new scsi adaptor but with in the virtual machine that scsi adaptor is not available. I need this scsi adaptor to be available on the virtual machine in order to utilize my tape library in the development network to test restore procedures.

In the VM, the SCSI card will not be visible as an Adaptec SCSI card.
The way to do this is to add your tape library as Generic SCSI devices to the configuration of your Backup Exec VM. Once you add a generic SCSI device, as virtual SCSI card will be added as well.
You need to add a Generic SCSI device for every SCSI address you have in the library. So one for the robotic arm and one for each of the tape drives.

How do I add my tape library as a Generic SCSI Device. The only choice I have is CDRom.

I also have to enter the scsi ID....

Where will I see the virtual SCSI card?

I only have one scsi device so this should be pretty simple.

I assumed you had 2 SCSI devices as you mentioned a tape library and not a standalone tape drive.

I suppose you're using VMWare Server? You will need to have drivers loaded in the host OS for the tape drive and - if you're using a library - also for the medium changer (don't use the Unknown Medium Changer either). Then the devices should show up in the drop-down list. (as Tape0 and possibly Changer0)
You can choose your SCSI ID yourself. If your hard disk is a SCSI hard disk, I recommend using another SCSI bus for the tape devices. So, if your SCSI hard disk is SCSI 0:0, you should put your library and drive on SCSI 1:0 and SCSI 1:1 for example.
If you have an IDE hard drive, just use SCSI 0:0.

The virtual SCSI card should show up in the Device Manager of the VM in the SCSI and RAID section.

If you don't see SCSI 1:x, you may want to add it to the vmx configuration file.
See http://www.vmware.com/support/gsx3/doc/devices_genscsi_win_gsx.html or http://pubs.vmware.com/server1/vm/devices_server.9.51.html

I have the Virtual machine seeing the Quantum Tape Libary and I am able to initialize the tape library but I am not able to inventory the tapes in the drive. It says (Ready; Noidle devices are available in the Job Status field in the Job Monitor)

Make sure you set the Removable Storage service on both the host OS and the VM to DISABLED.

After setting the host OS Removable Storage service to disabled I was able to see Changer0. The only thing is I had to set Changer 0 to Scsi 1:0 and Tape0 to Scsi 1:1.

Thanks.
