How to resolve: The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service terminated unexpectedly.

The System:
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 - Standard Edition - Service Pack 2
Microsoft Exchange 2003 Server Enteprise Edition - Version 6.5 (Build 7638.2: Service Pack 2)

The Problem:
I am getting the following errors every few minutes...
Event ID: 7031 - The IIS Admin Service service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this X time(s).
Event ID: 7034 - The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this X time(s).
Event ID: 7034 - The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this X time(s).
Event ID: 7034 - The Microsoft Exchange Routing Engine service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this X time(s).
Event ID: 7031 - The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this x time(s).

There are no Symantec apps installed, or any other av apps installed. We had TrendMicro ScanMail installed, it has been removed.
I tried the resolution at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=827214, but it's for SP1 only.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Update:
I have acquired an applied the hot fix for KB Article Number(s): 910618. This did not resolve the errors previously listed.

IIS admin is failing and pulling everything else down.
Therefore it has to be something related to that.
What state is the server in patches wise? Not just service packs.

What else is on the server?

Simon.

Everything is up to date. Security patches, drivers, and all.

Installed on the server (very minimal):
Advanced Port Scanner
CCleaner (optimizer)
HP Array Utilities
Lavasoft AdAware
Log Parser 2.2
MetaEdit 2.2
Port Detective
Ultra Network Sniffer
Adobe Reader 7.0
IE 6
Outlook Express
MS Outlook

This machine runs DNS, Active Directory and IIS.

Why do you need these on a server? Do you browse from the server?
CCleaner (optimizer)
Lavasoft AdAware

I also wouldn't be running network diag tools on the machine either...
Port Detective
Ultra Network Sniffer
Advanced Port Scanner

You also shouldn't have Outlook installed on the same server as Exchange. That is not supported. I don't think it will be the cause of the problems, but should still be removed and the server rebooted.

Browsing is only done on the server when updating and getting fixes. The diag tools are not running services.

Problem fixed. There was a conflict with a drive from another program. My advice....install NOTHING ELSE on the Exchange server! Once the programs were removed, the SMTP server was reinstalled and it was fine. Thanks for the attempt Simon.
