Restoring Gateway 3040GZ Laptop-Cannot access retore drive

Trying to restore a Gateway 3040GZ laptop for a friend. She had brought me over what she must have thought to be the restore disks, but my guess was she was supposed to make a set of back up disks but did not. Anyway, it seems as thought there is a restore partition on D drive. But it also has a padlock looking icon. If I start in command mode I can see several directories, but do not see any type of exe file.
Can the system be restored? How do I access D drive? I can wipe out drive and start from scratch if needed and reinstall OS, but prefer to do original backup since it is not my system and I do not want to have to hunt drivers etc.

Any info appreciated!

Some laptops that have a "restore partition" have some kind of startup keystroke that will invoke the restore (like "hit F11 before windows loads" or similar). This should be in the laptop's handbook... which probably can be accessed online at Gateway site.

You could also try to find anything about "system restore" in BIOS setup.
