Need help creating a button

I've been asked to modify a Flash file and I am not very familiar with Flash.  The Flash uses buttons and what I need to do is to add another button to the flash.  The button to be added looks very similar to another button on the stage so I want to copy that button and just make the changes I need to.  Steps taken so far:

1. Added a new layer to the timeline to put the new button on.
2. Went to the Library, highlighted the button to copy and chose duplicate
3. Renamed the duplicated button
4. Double Clicked on the duplicated button and changed the text on the button
5. Dragged the duplicated button onto the stage on the new layer added

When I changed the text on the duplicated button, it changed the text on the original button.  This is not what I want.  I want the original button to remain unchanged.

Ok well your procedure might have worked normally, but there's obviously some kind of anomoly.

Let's have a look at where things stand right now by considering some questions:

Single Click on one of the items in the library, does it show the same caption as the other item that you duplicated?

If they're different, consider this:

When you look at the two buttons on stage, are they both instances of the same thing?
(find this out by:
1. click on the button with the selection tool (V), so it's selected
2. in the properties box at the bottom of the screen it should say Instance of: ______
3. then click on the other button - is it the same name?
4. If it IS the same name, click the "Swap..." button, and select the item in the library which you want the other button to be an instance of.

Turns out that the button that I copied included a graphic that had the text so when I changed the text I was actually changing another object and didn't realize it until you told me what to look for.  Thanks for the help.
