basically my problem is with the sending of mail on a linux box. Last week I changed the gateway so people could access bugzilla outside of the  office. Since then (i believe this is when the mail stopped) mail isnt being sent anymore. I changed the gateway back, but still no mail is coming through. My question i guess is, is there a log file somwhere to see if the mail is being queued up or why it isnt being sent? I dont know Linux at all, so i dont know if the file structures are common.

Ok Distro is your Linux Distribution like RedHAT, SuSE, Ubuntu etc..
MTA is a (Mail Transfer Agent) Such as sendmail, postfix, exim etc..

What were the modifications you did initialy and how did you reverse them ?

I dont know either answer sorry. As far as the change I made, I only went to /etc/sysconfig then made a change to the gateway in the network file.

ok :)
if you went to i/etc/sysconfig then it is probably redhat or something like that.. You can verify it typing the contetnts of your /etc/issue like:
cat /etc/issue

This command is
uname -a

kernel and sytem and platform information.

Finally this command willl give the name of yr MTA
netstat -anpt | grep "0:25"

The mail is sent using sendmail and it should be set to send straight out to the internet. I logged into the linux box and tried to ping and IP address but got the following:  Destination Net Unreachable

ok lets do it step by step.
- First of all be sure that your internet interface is up and operational. You can check your interfaces with a command like :
ipconfig
it will show you the interfaces you have.
- then lets check your default gateway:
netstat -rn
will give you soe lines. the number after 0.0.0.0 is your default gateway. So try to ping your default gateway.  if you succeed it seems that your local connection is OK.

BTW will you tell me what have you changes in /etc/sysconf

The only change made was to the network file. I changed the gateway from .40 to .1

ok after you make the change did you restart networking or the system? this file is read only during interface activate / inactivate or system reboot.

For the time bieng it seems that your DG setting is wrong so that your system is not able to reach internet anymore.
