    Accepted Solution

Well there are numerous programs which you can set up as mail server.

    1. Alt-N MDaemon (my favorite)
    2. Mail enable
    3. Sun One / JES
    4. Postfix
    5. Sendmail
    6. QMail
    7. OpenXChange

All depends on your budged and your platform. I recommend you to start with MDaemon or MailEnable.

    Assisted Solution

    1. IMail Server
    2. hMailServer

I've used IMail, it's been good, easy to setup adn maintain.
Haven't used hMailServer, but I've heard good things about it, and it's free! :)

It depends a little on what other features you may want, and what operating systems you're using. If you want POP3/SMTP only, you've got tons of options. If you want IMAP, Calendars, global address books, etc, you have a shorter list, but there's still a lot of great stuff. Make sure you look at SPAM solutions as well, since most servers with built-in anti-spam features don't do a great job.

Commercial software may be a good option if you think you'll need a lot of support. Open source is great, if you can deal with figuring out most support issues by email/forum posts, docs, etc.
