Problems compressing email files

Upon closing email program, Outlook express suggested compressing to save space.  I chose the Inbox - and compressed the file.  I leave a large number of files for future reference (as many as 7,000 - 8,000) in the Inbox.  At year's end I more them to an annual file ie. "2005"

Now only emails received thru April 27, 2007 remain in Inbox.  There is a large file in C;\Recycler with today's date called Inbox.bak.

How do I recover the entire file with out losing the first 4 month's worth?

Al

Greetings ataranto !

You need to recover the new inbox.bak file, not the old one from Recycle bin.  With Outlook Express closed, do a search for inbox.bak and inbox.dbx files.  They should be both in the same folder.  Rename inbox.dbx to inbox.bak1   Rename inbox.bak to inbox.dbx.  Now when you open OE again, the emails will be there.

Outlook Express DBX location:

C:\Documents and Settings\<account name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\<hexadecimal number>\Microsoft\Outlook Express\  DBX files are hidden, so you have to unhide hidden files. Open Windows Explorer folder and select Tools > Folders Options > View. Check "Show hidden files and folders". Click OK.

I suggest not to compress any folder, as compression can cause corruption of the folder. Instead, move the emails to other folders for safe storage.

Best wishes, war1

No Inbox.bak in the ...Outlook Expresss folder.  I moved the .bak file from the RECOVERY folder and followed your name changing protocal.  All the messages were indeed there. I'm attempting to get the folder sizes down to where they will fit on a CD.  I plan to move some of the history "off-line" since I rarely need to reference it.  What can I do to stop Outlooks Express' attempt to compact these files every time I exit the program?

Al, glad you are able to recover your email.  To prevent OE from compacting, go to Tools > Options > Maintenance. Uncheck Compact Messages in Background. Click OK to exit.

Runnibg Ver 6.oo no such choice on Maintenence tab.  "How about Purge deleted messages when leaving IMAP folders"?

I have OE6 also.  You must be using a later version.  Yes, purging also compacts, but only affects IMAP accounts.
