Help setting up Symantec Backup Exec 11 Sets and rotation schedules

Experts,

I am new to setting up rotation schedules..

In the past we had run full backups manually for weekly/monthly purposes.. I had no problem setting up a full then incremental to have a weeks worth of onsite, then we would manually run a full backup.

We have been asked to setup our jobs to the following standards;

5.      Incremental backups (only files changed since the last backup) will be performed daily, except the day which the full backup is performed.  In lieu of an incremental backup, a full backup may be used on a daily basis.  These tapes will be stored onsite during the following backup cycle. At the end of the latter cycle, the daily tapes will be removed to a predetermined offsite location for storage for 2 weeks. When this 2 week period has elapsed, the tapes will be brought back on site for reuse for a period not to exceed one year.

6.      A full backup will be performed once a week.  The week of the fiscal month close should follow the monthly procedures listed below.  This tape will be stored on site during the following backup cycle. At the end of the latter cycle, the weekly tape will be removed to a predetermined offsite location for storage for 4 weeks. When this 4 week period has elapsed, the tapes will be brought back on site for reuse for a period not to exceed one year.

7.      A full backup will be performed once a month.  This tape will be immediately removed to a predetermined offsite location for permanent storage for storage of 12 months. These tapes may be reused up to four times.

8.      A full backup will be performed at the end of each fiscal quarter. This tape will be immediately removed to a predetermined offsite location for 7 year storage. These tapes will never be reused.

I need help decoding this and setting up the rotation schedules.

I was going to setup a boatload of sets ie;

Monthly Offsite - January, all the way to december.

Weekly Offsite - Week , all the way to 4

As well as yearly and fiscal years.

How would i go about automating this as much as possible?

please help as this is driving me nuts!!

Just do your incremental dailys and a full each week.

The weely, monthly quarterly backup sare really just your regular full weekly in most cases.

The only issue is that you have to know when the fiscal quarter ends. A second backup may be required if it does not coincide with your weekly backup. Same for monthly backps

I hope this helps !

How would i setup the sets for this? Right now I'm under the impression i would create four sets for each week and assign media to them, as well as sets for each month, and fiscal quarter, and year end.

Would I assign the daily media in each weeks set for the incremental backups? or put it in its own set?

1) It only looks like you need 2 weeks on site at a time.

6 days of incremental for each week, and 1 full.

2) The full goes offsite for 4 weeks and comes back for reuse after that, while the incrementals can be reused after 2 weeks.

In essence, you only need your daily incremental and your weekly fulls.

Most of your work will be logging the tapes and knowing where they are, you really do not need to change your schedule that much.

Create media sets with the appropriate Overwrite Protection Period
for eg 1 media set with OPP of 7 years
create 1 selection list for all the resources being backed up(it will be used by all yr backups)
create different jobs for FULL and Differential/Incremental and associate them with the appropriate media set

So i would create a media set for weekly and set the OPP to four weeks.

Create one for monthly and put the OPP to one year

I would assign all the tapes i need into just a few sets with the specific OPP ? and specify the vault rules with each set?

How many different jobs will i be running?
