SBS 2003 Sharepoint anouncments seem to arbitrarely dissapear

    Arbitrarely?  Are you aware that the default announcement list properties includes an "Expiration Date"?

    Also, are you viewing them in a Web Part (on the home page) that may be subject to modification, or even just configured to take up only a certain amount of space on the page?  Or are you viewing the actual list of announcements? (http://companyweb/Lists/Announcements/AllItems.aspx)
