I'm looking for an excellent DVD drive - your recommendations please

Good evening Experts,

I need a DVD drive which is fast, totally reliable and easy to use. I want it primarily for backups as I reckon that's probably the most cost effective way to back-up my files at home. If there are other more cost effective methods to backup my files do please let me know.

Machine: 1.6GHz
OS: Windows XP
HDDs: a) 80Gb - 60% free, b) 7.87Gb - 7% free (already used only for backups)

I recommend this dvd sata drive:

For backup entire system in case crashed system, use imaging soft tool like Acronis and extra external hard drive. Clone the whole system to external hard drive. And with Acronis you can also do daily backup.

I am not sure how to make use of a Sata drive. I wonder whether my mobo will support it. Is there an equally good alternative DVD drive.

Do you know your motherboard brand / model? But you can buy the IDE DVD RW drive unit which is not expensive nowaday. LiteOn, Sony, Samsung, or Philip vendors are good. Please see the link:

My motherboard is an Abit AT7-MAX2. It says is supports Serial ATA 150 - but I have to admit that means nothing to me.

Yes, your motherboard has 2 SATA port (150) which is also called SATA I . Either IDE or SATA will work on your system.

Punky,

Sadly NewEgg doesn't ship outside of the USA except to US Forces overseas. That's ironic that they'll ship to Iraq but not to Britain!

Any suggestions for an equally good website - NewEgg's prices are excellent.

Punky,

Thanks for that. It's not idleness on my part it's more that I've looked at many sites already and none of them even come close to NewEgg's prices.

TigerDirect offer great prices but charge an outrageous amount for shipping and handling - in excess of the value of the product! I'll continue the search - thanks for your help.

Not sure which solution I'm going to adopt but I do like the idea of a large external hard drive with Acronis or whatever.

PUNKY,

Perhaps you recall this question. This is an update and a thank you.

I bought a new hdd - 320Gb Hitachi IDE and Acronis. Both are working as intended and I now have a proper automated daily backup system - which is excellent and very reassuring.

So, thank you for your suggestions - very helpful indeed.

PUNKY,

It's worth reporting for those that might read this, that Acronis support by email is good but unfortunately Acronis has been inconsistent in how it treated my files. For example it says it cannot restore a whole lot of photos even though they are there. It states that that are corrupted - when they aren't. I have just had to restore 223 photos manually from the Acronis backup - one by one - simply because it won't 'read' them. Odd really - although it is very helpful to have the back up in the first place. So mixed feelings about Acronis now.
