Virtual PC provides the environment in which you can install a OS in a virtual machine.  Put the disk in the drive and start the virtual machine that you just setup.  Select the cd drop down and click use physical drive.  You can also capture a .iso if you've made a image of a cd.  Then you run thru the install just as if you were sitting in front of a real computer.

i'm not sure i'm getting the whole concept.  if someone can explain the process of installing from beginning to end i would appreciate it.  i've installed it to the point that the program VPC is asking to "start" and from there you can select the OS you want to run.  From that point what should I be doing.
Thanks,
Gene

VPC is emulation software, its like making an imaginary computer run inside a window. It has all the same characteristics as a normal computer. The emulation occurs at a hardware level so it creates virtual components for every piece of your computer (ie hard drive, memory, cpu, graphics adapter, even screen and io devices) This means you need to install an operating system onto that virtual hardware to use it (just as you would with a normal computer).
