exchange 2003 multiple nics and gateways

hi all,

exchagne 2003 all setup and working nicely it was setup and configured before my time of looking after company. I am curious as to why it has two nics in it which have two different ip address on the same subnet, something like 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2 they do have two different gateways on each as well one for our internet and one for our wan.

question is in an exchange 2003 environment would i be better off teaming these two nics together for better performance or could it be possible that this setup is to bring all email for the company in our the internet nic/gateway and then forward any email for sites on our wan out through the wan nic/gateway?

any advice appreciated.

Look at the SMTP virtual servers and the routing groups connectors.
Maybe this will explain this configuration.
I don't see any good reason though.
In a multi-homed computer, only one of the NICs should have a default gateway.

I don't find areason why you want to have 2 teams unless for teaming.
