You should have wireless router with AP, and it also has ethernet 4 ports as standard wireless router in the market now. Get the PCMCIA wireless card for laptop and try to use wire for desktop thru ethernet port (NIC). Use USB wireless adapter is OK but it looks not nice :)

The modem you have is from DSL service provider, right? if so, you need all devices above to make your home network.

One possible advantage of a USB wireless interface is that the USB cable can be used to position the antenna somewhere other than behind the computer.  In marginal situations, positioning can make a difference.

If a PCI card is used then it may have an antenna connector which could be used to support the same idea.
USB wireless card  has one disadvantage: it rely on your CPU to do its job. When your CPU is busy, your network connection could be disconnected.

I faced this once: everytime i launched my online game, i got disconnected and couldnot joint the game->I had to change to wired :(
Yes use the Netgear 4 port wireless router and its having one WAN port and connect that ISP modem cat5 cable to WAN port of the router and configure using in browser.
