Windows memory 4GB

Hi,

I have a HP Proliant DL360 G5 with 4GB of ram. I'm using Windows 2003 Standard edition.

The problem is it's only showing 3.25GB of memory under My Computer -> General.

Physical Memory shows Total 3405688 (K)

Yes this is quite normal. A 32 bit OS can address 4Gb of RAM but unfortunatly some of that address space is used to control system stuff like the PCI bus - meaning that even if you install 4Gb windows cannot use it all - it not wildows as fault but 32bit OSs in general. Now there are some work arounds and fudges including adding the /3Gb switch to the boot.ini file but the sad truth is that you will never get more than about 3.25-3.5 Gb of usable memory on a 4Gb machine. note that this is not recommended to use the "/PAE" switch. it reduce performance.

As haim96 says /PAE will allow Windows to access the RAM that the BIOS relocates to above the 4GB boundary, HP has recently updated their advisory on the PCI hole - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?&objectID=c00883105

/PAE switch doesn't work for windows 2003 standard.
Also /3gb wouldn't make any differance it just tell how much memory to allocate for windows and application.
Unless you upgrade to windows 2003 enterprise you won't be able to see the 4gb RAM

/PAE *does* work for win2003 standard, at least in as much as winver etc show the full 4GB after setting it. I don't know how to prove that Windows actually uses rather than just shows the full amount of RAM though.

The switch can be used on standard when the hardware supports 36 bit addressing.
