MSDE SP4 package won't install

I've recently installed MDSE 2000 SP3 (the msde200a, or whatever it's called, package) on an XP Pro box and need to update it to MSDE SP4. I've downloaded the SQL2000.MSDE-KB884525-SP4-x86-xxx.exe and extracted it to the default C:\SQL2KSP4 directory. When I try to install it, via the setup.exe or CLI, I get a "The instance name specified is not valid." error. There is only the default "SQLSERVER" instance on the machine. I've tried modifying the setup.ini with the "INSTANCENAME=MSSQLSERVER" but I still get the same error. Could someone please provide some assistance here as I'm about ready to take this machine to the roof and run a gravity test on it!!! :) Thanks a bunch in advance.

Do the gravity test, and post a link to pictures ;)

Thanks twoboats. That appears to have done it. I appreciate it.
No problem - you're welcome. Glad it's sorted.
