I am running sms 2003 on a windows 2003 server. all of my workstation are Dell loaded with windows xp.
I am  needin help getting a report of all the dell pcs and its serial number "express service code" and some hardware information. As of now I can not get any hardware information on any pc. I do not know how to setup  packages.

Part 2 of the problem. Dell has a package that check systems for any updates that are needed and can be push down to the workstations. I need help getting it installed right.

Hi ccdc12

Q1. "I am  needin help getting a report of all the dell pcs and its serial number "express service code" and some hardware information."
A1. It's fairly simple to create a custom report to gather this information however your next couple of statements cause some confusion:

S1."As of now I can not get any hardware information on any pc."
A1. So is SMS 2003 actually working? Do you see any computers in the collections?

S2. "I do not know how to setup  packages."
A2. Thats something totally different to gathering inventory information, however if SMS 2003 hasn't been correctly configured than packages won't work anyway.

Q2. "Part 2 of the problem. Dell has a package that check systems for any updates that are needed and can be push down to the workstations. I need help getting it installed right."
A2. Download and install the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update Version 3
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sms/2003/downloads/tools/dellupdates.mspx
Documentation is included with the software, the "Dell Update Version 3 allows you to determine compliance and deploy the necessary updates for Dell BIOS, firmware, and drivers using the same process utilized to deploy security updates with SMS 2003."

Cheers

Matrixnz,

To help clarify, I do see computers in the collections.
I am not able to see any hardware information. If I right click on a computer and select all task and choose start resource explorer no hardware information is shown on any of the pc listed.

Hi ccdc12

That means your computers don't have the Hardware Inventory Client Agent running on the Computers, if you go to a computer and:
Click Start
Click Control Panel
Double Click Systems Management Control Panel Applet
Select Components Tab
Verify SMS Inventory Agent Status is Enabled
If Yes than Select the Actions Tab
Select Hardware Inventory Cycle
Click Initiate Action

After several minutes check Resource Explorer again within the SMS Administrators Console.

You should also check that you have have configured the Hardware Inventory Client Agent

Open SMS Administrators Console
Expand Site Database
Expand Site Hierarchy
Expand SiteID - Domain
Expand Site Settings
Select Client Agents
Right Click Hardware Inventory
Select Properties
Check Enable hardware inventory
Select your schedule
My Schedule is set to Simple schedule
1 Days
Maximum custom MIF file size (kb): 250
Select MIF Collection Tab
Legacy Client
Check Collect IDMIF files
Check Collect NOIDMIF files
Advanced Client
Check Collect IDMIF files
Check Collect NOIDMIF files
Click Apply - OK

Cheers
