IOMAGIC EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVE STOPPED WORKING

This morning my IOMAGIC external hard drive was working fine.  But this afternoon, I can only access the root directory of the drive, a few folders, and it starts making a clunking noise, spins, clunks, acts like its trying to read the drive (but doesn't), and then the drive turns itself off.

I realize it would cost thousands to have a professional take this apart and recover the files.  I have heard of several different software tools, and putting it in the freezer, etc.  Any thoughts on how to recover the files from this drive cheaply?

Freezer method.
Place drive in a doubled ziplock bag.  You don't want condensation on the drive.  Leave the drive overnight.  Pull the drive from the freezer and see if you can read all the data.  If so,  you probably won't be able to pull off all the data before the drive warms back up, but worth a try.  If this works, devise a plan to keep the drive cool while pulling off the data.

Leave the drive in the freezer, hang your cable out of the door and try.
Get some dry ice, place in a container, place drive in container, but not actually touching the ice.

If data is corrupt, you can try:

not free, but a good utility

You are probably out of luck.  I've never had any of the aforementioned methods work, but it is worth a shot
