Use the free Darik's Boot and Nuke to wipe the hard drive.

http://dban.sourceforge.net/
Create a boot floppy or CD.

Wipe discs. This takes 2 or 3 hours, depending on the size of the disc.
Then install XP

Alan.

Also, press F2 to access bios, and make sure system detects hard drives and other devices correctly, also the boot sequence should be default.
Do not attach any external devices such as USB during installation in order to avoid confusion.

If the hard drive s flakey, it may not detect any XP OS.

1) Run the vendor's diag program on the hard drive to test it.

you can also boot from a knoppix cd, to be sure the hard is still ok :
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/knoppix/KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso

2) If it is OK, then it may have a damaged partition that needs to be recovered.

I hope this helps !

Check to make sure legacy USB is enabled in BIOS, or it can't see the input devices
