Notebook accessories?

When connecting a notebook to a port replicator, can you shut down the display LCD screen?  I have gone through many laptops because of the screen.  I wish to dock the laptop and not use the laptop keyboard or have the LCD display on, but still control the drives through an external monitor - possible?

ANy docking station has PS/2 mouse, keyboard, video port, COMs, etc. You can just plug the laptop on and use function buttons on docking (power up, etc.). Of course, you wont need to open LCD of laptop.

Most newer laptops have a function key to cycle between laptop screen, external screen or both.
But when you close the lid the laptop screen turns off anyway as Punky implys.
