Exchange 2000 migration to Exchange 2003. Migration tool says the two servers can not be in the same organization. Is there any way around this

i am installing a new exchange server 2003.  i have installed it into the same organization as my exchange 2000 server.  when i attemtpted to run the migration tool, it told me the two servers needed to be in different organizations.  What is the trick to run the migration tool without rebuilding my exchange 2003 server in a different org.  Can i run the migrate tool from a workstation and solve this problem.

the migration tool is correct. it is used to migrate between different exchange organizations
why are you using the migration tool after exchange 2003 has already been installed?
if you are using it to move mailboxes across, then use active directory users and computers to move them.

if it is in the same org, you can use the move mailbox rather that the MS Exchange Processing wizard.  MSEPW is for different org migrations

Hi,

If the servers are in the same domain and Exchange org then you shouldn't need to use the migration wizard. MailMig is used mainly to move from foriegn systems i.e. NON-Exchange. You should be able to move the mailbox using the move mailbox option via AD and config the public folders with replicas to the new server.

ok..the move the mailbox worked fine but the user we tested with gets a exchange server busy when the outlook client is moved to the new exchange server.

any ideas?

you might have to wait for some time before the user tries to access outlook due to the replication
