i have norton internet security 2007, i understand that its a bundle of diffrent software but it eats a lot of memory. is there any other software that has antivirus, ids, firewall, the whole shabangabang yet doesn't eat a ton of memory? is it as dependable as norton IS 07?  is there any other internet security/antivirus software that you'd consider more secure then norton?

also do you need seperate software to detect root kits?

"also do you need seperate software to detect root kits?"

    Yes, I highly recommend RootkitRevealer:

though it does nothing other than detect rootkits.

Are we talking about a single machine ?

I use AVG free version along with AVG AntiSpyware. Once in a while, I let scan my system by other antispyware solutions like adaware/spybot/rootkitrevealers etc.

Or if you want to automate the procedure, there is this software called 'hitmanpro' which actually does everything by involving the software's above.

I'd recommend Spy Sweeper from Webroot. It will protect against spyware and has virus protection that you can add. It also will sweep for rootkits. It doesn't have a firewall, but you can get desktop firewall from Webroot also if you'd like.
