McSchield service error

My McAfee - McSchield service will not start and marked in the task bar as being disabled.
it has worked on this station in the past.
things I have tried
uninstalled and reinstalled, logged in as another administrator, cleaned out the registry between installations
the info from the application log is nil

    There was a recent update issue that has impacted many McAfee users.  There is a link on the main page at that points to an email that was sent to those users.  I don't recall your symptoms being listed in the FAQs, but I'd suggest you follow the directions they've provided below to ensure your system is fixed which are found on the following page:  (note the 's' in https)

    Download and run the McAfee Removal tool

       1. To download the removal tool, go to
       2. If you receive a security alert, click Yes.
       3. Click Save to download the file to a location on your computer.
       4. Navigate to the location where the file was saved.
       5. Ensure all McAfee application windows are closed.
       6. Double-click MCPR2.exe to run the removal tool.
          Note: Windows Vista users must right-click and select Run as Administrator.
       7. Restart your computer when prompted. Your McAfee products will not be fully removed until you restart.
          All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

    Reinstall your McAfee Products

    If you are McAfee direct customer, go to and log in to download your McAfee products.

    If you received your McAfee products from your service provider, please use the list below to download your software.
    Comcast users should go to and log in to download your software.

    DELL users should go to and log in to download your software.

    Gateway users should go to and log in to download your software.

    eMachines users should go to and log in to download your software.

    MSN users should go to and log in to download your software.

    AOL users should go to and log in to download your software.

    If you continue to experience issues after following the instructions above, please go to for additional support.
