    put this in your login page code behind.

    Private Sub login_Authenticate(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Web.UI.WebControls.AuthenticateEventArgs) Handles login.Authenticate

    'Use authentication method of you choice. ie. connect to sql server or Oracle
    if user is authenticated then
    e.authenticated = true
    e.authenticated = false
    end if

    End Sub

    The above code overrides the login control's Authenticate method.  You can then modify it to access your user database to authenticate how ever you want to.
