I noticed that I no longer have sound coming from my computer.
I when into the Device manager and noticed under System Devices | Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator has an exclamation point at the front of its line. When I click on properties I see the following message: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)
I have disable, enabled, deleted and reinstalled the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. The exclamation point remains.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the on board sound card.

How can I get rid of that exclamation point?

Thanks!

Thanks guys for replying!

I used the procedure(s) to reinstall the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. The exclamation point remains.

I checked under Services and saw that the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator service is setup to startup (started) at boot time automatically. What is getting in its way to startup successfully?

Question, would flashing the motherboard help?
I know that there is a later version.

Going through the procedure to remove the defective copy of the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator and then reinstalling it with the same files on the hard drive (swenum.inf & swenum.sys I think) were not working for me.  What if those files were corrupt?  And where does this Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator come from? it appears to come from the chipset.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I wanted a fresh clean copy of the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator.   So I decided to take a chance and return to the source and reinstall a portion of the chipset. I know that this is a dangerous move because if you don't have the correct chipset data you are likely to render your computer useless.

But I must say that  I have been lucky I now have a clean copy of the Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator.  I don't have those error messages appearing in the device manager anymore.  I'm just hoping that I haven't damaged anything on the computer by reinstalling a portion of the chipset.set.
Only time will tell.

Cheers!
