Cannot access microsoft.com or symantec.com

I am using Windows XP SP2 and Symantec Norton Internet Security 2007.

For a couple of months I have been unable to access the symantec.com website (so cannot update virus definitions other than manually by using my laptop) or the microsoft.com website (so cannot download updates for microsoft products).  I get the standard 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' page.

I suspected a virus, but all virus checks have been negative.

The hosts file at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC appears to be fine, containing only '127.0.0.1       localhost'.

Any helop would be much appreciated as frustration levels are rising!

Superantispyware is probably the best product for dealing with this type of problem:

Then, I would recommend running a full A/V scan here:

A bizare thing happened during the coruse of this morning.  Having endured this problem for two months, Wondows dopwnloaded an update which appeasr to have sorted the problem.  Bewidering!

Anyway, I'm sharing the points between the five of you who took the trouble to respond to my plea.  Thanks for your help.
