Applications hanging after uninstall

I removed some components using Control Panel/Add-Remove (google toolbar for IE, SKYPE toolbar plus some others which i knew i didn't use)

After this I was 'MOVING' a Folder from my desktop to a USB HDD. The 'MOVE' stopped responding and i use TaskMan to end it. The folder i was moving was still on the desktop and when i tried to put it in the recycle bin it remained on the desktop and there was no error message.

I then used IE7 and found that it browsed OK but any attempt to use the 'FIL" menu caused it to 'HANG'.

I then thought i would remove IE7 but when I started control panel/add remove the applications window did not populate (no removable programs in the pane ....EMPTY)

I then went to do a system restore but i could only get as far as the point where the system restore should occur and this application also hung with no error message

I am at my wits end...all other applications seem to be working OK (Outlook, SKYPE, MSN) whay has gone wrong ??

Reboot into Safe mode ... and try ..

When u said u had to KILL the Move operation using the taskmanager... the Explorer.exe would have been killed..

and try....? wot

I am more concerned that Control Panel, System Restore and IE are not functioning. It looks to me like one of the unistalls I tried removed a component they all rely on

I have had "MOVE" file crash on me many times before and then not been able to remove the folder that was being moved. I have since tried to re-install IE but it keeps failing on the reboot...i am now left with IE6 but that versions still hangs if i try and use any option , even 'HELP' from the menu

one other thing to note is that I can EXIT IE using the normal methods so some parts of IE are intact !!!

th eonly option i can find from HP is a recovery which will wipe out all the installed applications. Where can I get to a 'repair' option?

ASKER

tried boot XP CD and got to repair option
it offered me...
1. C:Windows
2. F:MiniNT
3. G:Windows
I chose 1. C:Windows
it then asked for the Administrator password and I entered it
each time it rejected it and then stopped after the third time telling me it had been incorrect 3 times

started windows and double checked the Administrator password and it was correct as I had entered it. The Administrator account had all the same problems as my USER account and was painfully slow

Re-ran the XP boot repair and tried the correct/proven Administrator password but still got kicked out after three goes.

Have even tried to run/install a registry fixer utility but it hangs during the install. Also noticed that my PrevX virus scanner is now hanging during the startup scan.

in the end this turned out to be a disaster. i believe that the problem was related to microsoft updates and skype updates downloading at the same time.
i tried to use the HP recovery partition but it would not start so i used a number of different utilities to allow me to finally recover
i will award the points to the person who suggested re-installation
